To-no-Hetsuri
“To-no-Hetsuri” is a tourist spot famous for its natural beauty created over a million years and the thrilling swaying suspension bridge.
“To-no-Hetsuri” is a scenic spot along the Agagawa River located in Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It is designated as a national natural monument. A stratum that was formed a million years ago was uplifted and weathered by river erosion and wind and rain over many years, creating a tower-like cliff. In early summer, wisteria flowers hang from the cliffs, and in autumn, you can enjoy the scenery of beautiful autumn leaves. “Hetsuri” means cliff in dialect. Famous tourist attractions such as Ouchi-juku and Yunokami Onsen are nearby.
There are 10 tower-shaped cliffs in total, lined up over 200m, and each has a name. A path has been carved around these cliffs, but there is a danger of collapse, so the area that can be explored is limited.
There is a suspension bridge to cross over to “To-no-Hetsuri”, but it sways and gives you a thrilling feeling. No more than 30 people can cross the suspension bridge at one time.
The nearest station of “To-no-Hetsuri” is “To-no-Hetsuri Station” on the Aizu Railway. You can go to “To-no-Hetsuri” in about 5 minutes from the station.
Access to To-no-Hetsuri
It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes from JR Tokyo Station to JR Koriyama Station by Tohoku Shinkansen. Transfer to the JR Banetsu West Line at JR Koriyama Station and get to JR Aizuwakamatsu Station in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. From JR Aizuwakamatsu Station, transfer to JR Tadami Line/Aizu Railway Aizu Line to To-no-Hetsuri Station in about 45 minutes. Get off at To-no-Hetsuri Station.
